UNIQUE PILOT IN LOUISIANA
On May 3 and 4, the Louisiana DDS began a pilot using LBM’s UniQue NT Print Server product in order to print I.Levy & Associates applications to the IWS/LAN printers at remote offices that currently have VS65 machines which are non-Y2K compliant. The participants included Bill Fesler from I. Levy, Steve Bardwell, from LBM Systems and Dan Millard from SSA. The installation and configuration of the product ended on May 4th and the Louisiana DDS is now testing at a remote office using the SSA Wide Area Network and the IWS/LAN infrastructure that is in place. What this product gives the LAN environment is an accessible print queue that looks comparable to the Wang print queue so that print traffic can be tracked and administered once it leaves the Wang environment and goes to the LAN environment.

This product loads on an NT machine that SSA provided for the pilot which is now connected to the Backbone in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. and will service IWS/LAN printers at some of the remote offices as well as those in house. This product uses the Lightspeed product to register and service the printers defined in the network. Printers are configured on the Wang machine in the Lightspeed environment and registered by the Print Server on the Backbone. The current overlays on the Wang machine were transferred to the Print Server and forms were created on the Server to match the setting on the Wang. Printers are then created on the Print Server that match the settings of those defined in the Wang machine.

The tests included the printing of all federal forms (831,832,833, MRFC, CDEF, PRTF, ect.) as well as some local forms created in-house. Louisiana DDS went through some production tests with certain users and were successful printing all forms to the IWS/LAN printers in the Levy environment. Some modifications to some Levy print routines were done onsite during the pilot in order for the application to work seamlessly and some modifications are currently in the works by both Levy, LBM and Lightspeed to address some issues that surfaced in the test. The staff feels confident that this product will meet the current need to print to offices that have Wang machines now but in the future will lose them due to Y2K. They will also take advantage of the product to print to IWS/LAN printers at sites that need more printers in the production environment and make use of the printers delivered with the IWS/LAN. Tests were done on both IBM Network 17 and Lexmark printers.
